Theodore "Hound Dog" Taylor was born on April 12, 1917, in Natchez, Mississippi. By day, he was a sharecropper; by night, he played the delta jukes. In 1942, following a dangerous encounter with the Ku Klux Klan, he high-tailed it out of the South to Chicago. There, he held a day job while building his reputation as a musician, performing in South and West Side blues clubs and on the streets. It wasn't until the late '50s that he became a full-time musician, playing regularly at the Expressway Lounge. Taylor developed a raw vocal style and blistering slide guitar technique, using a cheap Teisco Del Rey guitar powered through a Sears Roebuck amplifier. He also had a physical condition called polydactylism, which resulted in an extra finger on each hand. Hound Dog Taylor first recorded in 1960 for Bea and Baby Records, and again in 1962 for the Firma label. The resulting 45s were his only releases during the '60s and these four tracks are included on this record. As a bonus, Jerome Records have added two tracks by Mississippi-born, long-time blues veteran Homesick James, who, after recording several 45s in the early '50s, didn't get another single released until 1962. Both numbers feature Taylor on guitar. He died in December 1975, after releasing four albums on the Alligator label, leaving his own epitaph: "When I die, they'll say, 'He couldn't play shit, but he sure made it sound good!'". Strictly limited edition of 250 copies.

The contribution of Mickey Baker to 1950s music puts him next to titans like Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry. He is undoubtedly the king of '50s R&B guitar as well as an inventor of the sound called rock and roll. The difference between these two and Baker is that his career has been unfairly undervalued, if not almost unknown. And his recorded output is five times more than Chuck and Bo combined. The most in-demand studio musician/session guitarist par excellence during the golden years of the R&B laid the foundation for rock and roll. This tireless, hard-working musician spent half his life in the studio and the other half on tour and left his mark on hundreds, thousands of recordings, among which are hits from artists like Big Joe Turner, Ruth Brown, or The Coasters. His incendiary riffs and solos were always aggressive, twisted, but elegant sounding. Baker possessed creativity ahead of his time with excellent taste, and completely transformed the concept and role of the electric guitar into rock and roll forever. But don't panic. This is far from being an album for guitarists or academics. It is a selection of rare recordings that showcase him backing various singers and a few instrumentals easily moving through styles of R&B, blues, rock, gospel, and folk done for different labels between 1953 and 1961. Jerome Records are happy to present this diverse compilation with stunning sound quality and much of the material never before reissued. Enjoy the experience of discovering or remembering the immeasurable Mickey Baker, the king of and most recorded guitarist in 1950s rhythm and blues. Remastered from original 45s. Features recordings with Big John Greer And His Combo, Big Maybelle, McGhee Sextet, Marie Knight, Doc Bagby, Stick McGhee, Brother John Sellers, The Cyclones featuring Eddie Jones, Mickey And Kitty, Jesse Stone, Nappy Brown, and Mickey And Sylvia.

If you enjoy uplifting sing-along family spiritual songs with crystal-clear vocal harmonies and a swirling synth-organ, this gospel album definitely is not for you. Go Devil Go! represents precisely the other side of the coin. The material collected here shows the most savage and visceral side of vintage gospel music. On this God-forsaken disc, the hymnals range from hypnotic mid-tempo primitive rural blues to chaotic, raw R'n'B workouts. Guitars and furious hand-claps accompany singers who do not speak of this world and are pushing hard to get to the other side. But fear not, the lyrics, messages and screams on this LP call out to the bottom-feeders, backsliders, and miscreants to redeem ourselves from the wages of sin and the inferno that waits for us down below. Go Devil Go! is Jerome Records' own selection from the glorious 3CD set Fire in My Bones compiled by Mike McGonigal in 2009. Most of the recordings included here were published in 45s or 78s for less known independent companies, some by tiny local labels and sometimes paid by the church congregation itself. As McGonigal explains in the liner-notes: "This is Gospel -- which we must always remember translates as 'the good news' (...) I find it to be among the most vibrant, playful, beautiful and emotionally-charged music in the world." Amen.

Life's a bitch, and so is the world -- for Ike Turner at least. Neither his late and absurd Hall Of Fame induction nor the release of compilations like this one will ever do justice to one of the KEY characters in the birth and development of R&B. That is why any album underlining his historical importance and artistic talent deserves plenty of attention. Down And Out -- available on vinyl only -- gathers the very best of Ike's output as a solo artist and as the leader of the Kings Of Rhythm during the '50s. This feast of raw R&B includes "I'm Lonesome Baby," his legendary first 45, the killer instrumentals "Cuban Getaway" and "Cubano Jump," as well as "Box Top," the recording debut of a very young Tina Turner. Features exquisite cover art, remastered sound, liner notes and discography by specialist Fred Rothwell, the man who is currently writing Ike Turner's biography.

Subtitled: The Pre-Specialty Sessions 1951-1953. The legend wants it that when Little Richard was working as a dishwasher in a restaurant, he used to sing and shout in the same irrepressible way that would make him famous a few years later, when his concerts were being televised all around the world. This set finally corroborates such a legend. The Implosive Little Richard illustrates the reconstruction process of the wildest and freest identity in rock and roll history. Here are all of Richard's first recordings from the early '50s with the Johnny Otis and Billy Wright bands, the Deuces of Rhythm and the Tempo Toppers. All his pre-Specialty, pre-"Tutti Frutti" waxings, including his four RCA singles and all the 45s he recorded for Peacock Records. Housed in a gatefold sleeve with extensive liners, label shots, dozens of pictures, vintage press clippings and reviews.

Jerome Records presents this first ever compilation showcasing all of Bo Diddley's pre-debut studio recordings. The riveting recordings he launched in the mid-'50s, with their unmistakably powerful phrasing, mesmerizing riffs and wild beat, changed the course of popular music and gave way to one of the most personal -- and most frequently imitated -- sounds in rock and roll. And yet, Bo Diddley's unique artistic personality goes beyond his work as a singer, guitar player and performer: this collection showcases his skills as a first-rate composer, talent-scout, session musician and producer of R&B stars such as Little Walter, Billy Boy Arnold, Billy Stewart, the The Schoolboys and the The Marquees (featuring a youthful Marvin Gaye in their line-up). Deluxe packaging with artist pics, label shots and extensive liner notes by George R. White, author of Living Legend, Bo Diddley's biography. Remastered sound.
