Double LP version. Generation '22: Chanson with soul. When others celebrate anniversaries, they reminisce. Le Pop is different: Vol. 10 looks ahead into the future. The new compilation is younger, more feminine female and soulful than its predecessors. All the names are represented on Le Pop for the very first time. A new start, a new generation. New stars like Emma Peters, Iliona, UssaR, P.R2B, Ariane Roy, and Clou are all at the beginning of their careers but they will shape the chanson of the next years. Voyou, KCIDY, Malik Djoudi, and Laura Cahen are past their debut phase and have just released their most beautiful albums so far. They are joined by Edwige, Elisa Erka, and Camélia Jordana -- all singers who are also actresses, their cinematic flair bringing extra elegance to the genre. In addition to the clear majority of female voices, what is striking about Le Pop 10 is to hear how the new generation is influenced by the hip-hop and R'n'B of recent years. With emphasis on influence because despite soul-heavy melodies and experiments with spoken word, the Generation '22 nonetheless remains true to Chanson and French pop at its core. The French tradition is changed, however, by a new confident groove and flow. Le Pop 10 is more than an update of the genre, it is once again an exciting new beginning for Le Pop. Also features Palatine, Carla De Coignac, and Suzanne Lindon.

Haiku-chanson with a US touch -- Fredda invents her own musical Land. From chanson's meeting with Japanese poetic forms and the garnishing sound of the American coast emerges a new album by Fredda. Where the sound of the words alone resonates with musical poetry, where words need no real translation, a singer, songwriter, and composer turns Francophone pop into an art form. Fredda's consistent development has awakened a sense of depth and soul. The title, Land, sets both the theme and the musical philosophy of the album. Fredda's fifth album is thereby an open arena for all those willing to occupy it, no matter where they come from. Fredda ignores musical boundaries and creates new connections; topical themes of uprooting and nomadism also play their own role in the lyrics. With Land, Fredda's songwriting has reached maturity and naturalness, but this seeming lightness and naturalness is in fact the result of meticulous work. Having put aside the already-finished album, Fredda decided to record it again -- having suddenly been struck by a very clear vision of how the character and sound of the songs should be. Her partner in recording and arrangement was for the second time round Pascal Parisot. After recording -- with guitarist Stéphane Louvain and the Fredda's live rhythm section Nicolas Desse and Alexandre Viudes -- a last decisive piece of puzzle was missing on the way to the end result of Land: for the mixing Fredda worked at Waterworks Studios in Tuscon, Arizona with producer Jim Waters (Calexico). Land is a sparkling jewel in which each song has its own place on Fredda's musical map: from the harmoniously flowing "Ma Rivière" to the melodic-hypnotic "Maintenant", along to the pearls of pop "Neige Rose" and "Maintenant". Thematically between a duet with Parisot ("Siestes Anciennes") and the perfect ending of "Les Amantes" lies the thematic key to the album: "Sur La Lande". Building on the atmospheric lightness of L'Ancolie (LPM 035CD, 2012) and the infectious energy of Le Chant Des Murmured (2014), Fredda has increasingly established clearer lines and now defines a new musical territory with Land -- a cosmos of chanson, melody, vocals, and sound meeting in artistic harmony unmistakably reflecting Fredda's strong personality.

Double LP version. The new Chanson generation, re-modernized and reshaped! A new generation of artists is born to shake up the French pop scene. It isn't without reason that the Le Pop 9 compilation is subtitled Au Début: 16 new French artists, none of which have ever appeared on a Le Pop compilation before, hereby introduce themselves. The modern sound of the current French pop scene allows for its listeners to rediscover the creativity of chanson-pop in all its different facets. The 2018 generation is influenced by electronic sounds and production styles deriving from R&B and hip-hop. The two brains behind Polo & Pan are DJs, Hollydays' singer is a Rihanna fan whilst her partner prefers Amon Tobin and Aphex Twin. Whoever sees the high achieving Angèle on stage will be perplexed by her dance moves -- until one finds out her brother is the famous Belgian rapper Roméo Elvis. And there's more: Ezéchiel Pailhès first appeared in electronic duo Nôze whilst the George Moustaki prize winner Laurie Darmon drifts from chanson into speech song and stands beside a human beatbox performer on stage. La Femme, awarded twice by the Victoire de la musique, showcases their Francophone indie pop with four keyboards on the stage. No trace of guitar rock nostalgia of the old times. And in "Poésies" the singer Chaton's voice is made foreign through autotune effects, so that the song becomes a subtle reminiscence of modern dancehall. In comparison to the cool naturalness of Flavien Berger, arguably the central figure of the new scene, many bands aiming for international success with their average English are made to look like wannabe hipsters. The wealth of ideas hidden behind Ali Danel, who for instance reinterprets a Paul Éluard poem onto an Afro-beat backdrop, seem in line with a contemporary re-appropriation of Gainsbourg's "Percussions" principle -- without making it sound a little out of date. But the special thing about it all is that, in its very essence, the music remains chanson. The language and words define the genre, with voices central to the production and melodies remaining frameworks in which the songs are structured. And so, Le Pop 9: Au Début is simply another piece of evidence of the vitality and vibrancy of a genre that is being constantly renewed musically amidst changing frameworks and thus remaining perpetually fascinating. Also features Pomme, Eddy Crampes, Alexia Gredy, Adrien Soleiman, Achille, and Gérald Kurdian.

A special edition in the Le Pop series, La Boum is a party compilation that shows just how danceable and versatile the modern chanson is - It is clever, energetic, full of humor and extremely diverse. Since the beginning of the series, the Le Pop DJ team (Oliver Fröschke and Rolf Witteler) have promoted their compilations by playing them at release parties and at special events like German-French festivities. Over the years, some tracks have emerged as favorites, a sure way to get people on the dancefloor time and time again. The series has always been rhythmically diverse, but a compilation of new francophone music, with one track as danceable as the next, is something the Le Pop DJ team has dreamt of for a long time. The span of musical variety on this album could not be broader. From the playfully cutesy opener "Polka" to the crude '60s-garage hit finale "Voulez- Vous Coucher Avec Moi?", Le Pop La Boum takes the listener on both a geographical and a stylistic journey past the most daring corners of the world of francophone music. From southern French dancehall to the YéYé-punk colossus "Bordel" - from the indie party-hit "Singapore Slang" from Montréal to the recklessly drummed, high-speed rock'n'roll track "Corinne" by Mathieu Boogaerts. Even Benjamin Biolay shows himself in a new light, as a Cumbia crooner singing in duet with the Uruguayan-Argentinian reggae singer Alika. Julian Baer's chanson-funk and the young newcomer Cléa Vincent's retro disco track are equally refreshing. Just like all other editions of this series, Le Pop La Boum not only works well on the dancefloor, but it is a compilation that can be enjoyed at home as well. There are also plenty of new names to check out, that have previously not been featured by Le Pop; Apart from Mathieu Boogaerts, Alexis HK and Benjamin Biolay, all names introduced on Le Pop La Boum are new. La Boum is the third special edition in the Le Pop series, after the duet sampler En Duo (LPM 004LP, 2004) and Les Filles (2008), and throws an entirely new light on the vibrant neo-chanson scene. Also features: Luce, Radiomatic, Call Me Poupee, Arthur H Et -M-, Oai Star, Fabulous Trobadors, Noze, Thomas Dutronc, Agnes Bihl Et Tom Poisson, Alister, and Marcel Bontempi.

Arizona's Sergio Mendoza and his band La Orkesta mix myriad Latin styles -- what Mendoza calls "indie mambo," salted with generous handfuls of cumbia, merengue, and ranchera -- and then feed all that through a psychedelic prism. They perform their songs with charm and panache, set off by the fireworks of the group's resident showman, the multi-talented Salvador Duran, who sang with Willie Nelson on "Senor" in the 2007 Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There, and has performed alongside Neko Case, Iron and Wine, and Glen Hansard. Sergio Mendoza Y La Orkesta, the band's full-length debut, was originally released as an LP in 2012.

This is volume 8 in the long-running Le Pop series from Germany's Le Pop Musik. Actually if you count the two special editions En Duo and Les Filles, it's the 10th compilation around songs in the most romantic language in the world: French. For the first time ever on Le Pop, legendary '80s star Etienne Daho is here, singing a beautiful duet with one of the most important figures of the so-called "New Chanson" movement: Dominique A. Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier appears on another duet with Belgian singer Benjamin Schoos. Well-established names like superstar M aka Matthieu Chedid, Fredda, Betrand Belin and JP Nataf present new songs here. But Le Pop 8 also includes a lot of new names. If you need an update of what is going on in the new French pop world, you need to listen to upcoming artists like Juniore, Mustang, Nicolas Michaux, Liz de Lux, Babx, Vianney, Maissiat as well as Francois & The Atlas Mountains. It's chanson, it's alternative pop, it's the perfect combination of two worlds. Rich with melodies, wonderful arrangements, and great voices. Also features the exclusive track "Je mentirais" by French crooner Sammy Decoster. Other artists include: Jimmy Hunt and Etienne Daho. Includes a great booklet in French, English and German.

Le Pop Musik presents an album from singer-songwriter Andrew Collberg. Collberg was eight when he discovered his love for music, 16 the first time he won a band contest, 18 when he debuted his first album, and 22 when he created On the Wreath -- an album full of catchy and guitar-oriented songs, and gems many a hyped UK band would build their entire career upon. Andrew is not British, though. His hometown is Tucson, Arizona, and the opinion leaders in Great Britain haven't discovered this lively scene in the Southwest U.S. Andrew Collberg belongs to a group of incredibly talented musicians such as Brian Lopez, Sergio Mendoza, and Gabriel Sullivan, who have already set foot in Europe on their legendary "Tucson Songs" tour in 2012. Minds Hits is not only another milestone in Andrew Collberg's musical evolution -- the album opens up a new perspective of the Sweden-born musician who taps the musical heritage of his adoptive hometown Tucson without prejudice and distills it to his very own sound. Minds Hits is undoubtedly a masterpiece -- more mature and self-sufficient than its predecessor, but still as carefree as Andrew Collberg has us accustomed to.

Parisian singer-songwriter Fredda (Frédérique Dastrevigne) is poised to join the circle of French sirens with her new album, L'ancolie. Enchanting with beautiful and unique chansons, this is a celebration of the album as a musical art form, a balance of attention to the very last detail. Fredda's musical career began by singing alongside her partner chanson singer Pascal Parisot. In 2007, her debut album Toutes mes aventures (LPM 014CD) was released on Le Pop Music. Her biggest hit to date, "Barry White," was featured on the U.S. television series "Suits" and numerous international compilations. After her second album, Marshmallow Paradise -- a musical journey through America -- Fredda found a new sound with L'ancolie. She enlisted guitarist Mocke of the Parisian band Holden, after meeting him on a Le Pop tour in 2007. Throughout the album, Mocke's virtuoso solo guitar hovers gently around Fredda's voice. Other contributors include Marianne Dissard (from Tucson, AZ), who wrote the lyrics for "Morin Heights" and "Journal Intime," and songwriter Bastien Lallemant contributed one track as well. Who Fredda listens to and from whom she draws her influence from are unmistakable. Stylistically, she leans on folk singers like Karen Dalton and Vashti Bunyan, but also a great deal on the traditional music of the Appalachian Mountains. A few of the songs on L'ancolie are fed by a tender blues line. Fredda blends these influences into a new form of chanson with a truly classical approach by plucking threads of the French tradition and weaving them into her own contemporary interpretation. Even those who are not intimate with French will be able hear the language's poetic nature in Fredda's music. Subtle arrangements, use of acoustic instruments -- banjo, upright bass, understated percussion alongside her guitar -- and above all, Fredda's way of imbuing a romantic tone. Fittingly, there is no better metaphor than the name of a flower. L'ancolie is a rapturous love letter to the melancholic moments of life.

With a voice like a choir of angels, Americana in the soul and flamenco in the heart, Brian Lopez' debut Ultra ascends to the top of the Tucson, Arizona new music scene. Juggling chamber pop and heartstrings, desert rock and epic melodies, we discover an album doing honors to classic crooners such as Roy Orbison, and yet creating a truly contemporary soundscape: ultra-magical, ultra fascinating, ultra-Brian Lopez. Formally known as front-man of the eccentric rock band Mostly Bears, he has clearly come a long way, leading him through the discovery of his Spanish origins along which he has created a fascinating style. Ultra is a stunning debut as a solo artist, which will propel Brian Lopez next to Giant Sand and Calexico as the third major export coming from his hometown, Tucson. The incomparably high timbre in Lopez' voice induces pleasant goosebumps. Over the years making music, he has developed a very unique style of interpreting songs and during his studies of guitar and piano at the conservatory of Tucson, his voice received its fine tuning as well. For his solo debut, Brian Lopez takes himself and his audience on a musical journey on which he is able to realize his visions all-out. Ultra is fed upon the high vocal quality and the elemental sound of Brian Lopez, always enchanting through subtle string arrangements, emphasizing the sinews of each song. The output is an album with a timeless, classical sound and a truly unique character, marrying a variety of influences into a harmonious musical whole. Includes mp3 download code.

2LP version. Tucson Songs: Exciting New Sounds From Southern Arizona is a stunning portrait of a musically sizzling city. In between mambo, country & western and Americana, a new desert sound is blossoming in Arizona. Tucson Songs contains 18 songs, 90% are previously-unreleased. Including two exclusive tracks by Giant Sand and Calexico. Ask most music fans which cities come to mind and most will state the obvious -- Detroit, Nashville, Seattle, Austin, Philadelphia, Portland. But, tucked into the southwest desert is one that deserves a place on that list -- Tucson. This "smallest big city in the USA" has always been home to a steady music scene, but in recent years, has become a vibrant Mecca for musicians. With the ever-shining sun and cheap rent for generous spaces, Tucson is the perfect place for musicians to stretch their legs and delve into their craft. For the past decade or so, bands like Giant Sand and Calexico have been delivering up quintessential sounds of the desert. But any connoisseur of the late '80s will remember bands that paved the way for that sound, bands such as Green On Red, Chris Cacavas and Al Perry and The Cattle. However, a closely-guarded secret that is about to be cracked wide open is the latest generation of highly-talented musicians that are launching their own flagships of sounds from Arizona. A combination of Tucson's extremely relaxed atmosphere with the prickly landscape dominated by unforgiving cacti makes for new good sounds, rhythms and songs. Along the way, this new crop of bands has had a helping hand from their pioneering forefathers -- Calexico is to Sergio Mendoza Y La Orkesta as Giant Sand's Howe Gelb is to Brian Lopez. However, none of this hot-bed of talent would have come to our attention had it not been for Tucson's French-born chanteuse Marianne Dissard. She wisely plucked up many of these budding musicians to bring along with her on her European tours. And now, they appear on this compilation with their own offerings, including Andrew Collberg, Brian Lopez, Gabriel Sullivan and Sergio Mendoza. Her ex-husband, Naim Amor and fellow musicians like Amy Rude, Silver Thread Trio and Courtney Marie Andrews are also all at the core of a familiar scene that inspires the good kind of sounds. Researching the rich local music scene ended up in Le Pop putting together a sampler-concept compilation album entitled Tucson Songs... and on the treasure hunt, Le Pop got a lot of help navigating the scene from Joey Burns (Calexico) and über-knowledgeable local radio host Dr. Dan Twelker. Tucson Songs... is a portrait of a musical city like no other -- a melting pot and creative oasis in the desert. Other artists include: Taraf de Tucson, Françoiz Breut, Otherly Love, Boffomet, Golden Boots and Bread And Circus. Includes a free download code.

The fact that Le Pop 5 continues to have such a fresh and innovative sound is due to the continuing metamorphosis of the strong European music scene. Despite the growing popularity of artists like Dominique A, Mathieu Boogaerts and Benjamin Biolay , they continue to develop their style. This is well demonstrated by Dominique A, pre-cursor of the scene, whose "La Fin D'un Monde" is a beautiful, almost classical melody produced in a fascinating way and creating a perfect ambience for Dominique A's inimitable voice. Mathieu Boogaerts came up with a more radical change: departing from his habitual songwriting technique, he has turned to composing rhythm structures on a drum kit. His song "Allez" exhibits his artful and wily pop style. By contrast, Benjamin Biolay has stayed within the tradition of the scene's patriarch, Serge Gainsbourg -- although in doing so, he reveals his very own grandeur as songwriter and composer. Vincent Delerm re-emerges as laid-back and confident as ever with "Je Pense A Toi." Le Pop 5 also features the world premiere of "La Plage," an atmospheric duet by Bastien Lallemant and Holden singer Armelle Pioline, in the best tradition of Nick Cave's murder ballads. Other artists include Coeur de Pirate, Arizona Marianne Dissard and Naim Amors.

2010 release. Andrew Collberg's On The Wreath alludes to a lot of famous songwriters and bands from music history: Lennon, Kinks, Byrds, Dylan, Young. The fact that the album is still dated in the here and now is due to the influence eighties guitar pop in the eighties up to now - starting with REM, the Go-Betweens and Galaxie 500 up to Elliott Smith and Badly Drawn Boy. Compare Collberg's album with current songwriters, and it's his musical gamut that really stands out. The vibrant album cover reflects the diversity and vitality of his style. Optimistic up-tempo-songs for which the label of guitar pop was invented, beside slower tracks and melodic ballads. It is no coincidence that the opener "Clouds Of All Your Rain" is reminiscent of the Go-Betweens' legendary rain song "Spring Rain"." The intense "To The Road" starts out with a tune similar to Bob Dylan's "New Morning" and develops into a euphoric pop song. "Clementine" unfolds in exemplary fashion; the track starts like a ballad with a sluggish beat which gets twisted into a classical mid-tempo-groove, finally unfolding its beauty in the chorus. Finesses like these that can be found in plenty: In "man in the moose suit" Collberg seems to resurrect John Lennon. Songs like "Garbage Day" or "The Tide Below" offer a glimpse into the Scandinavian pop tradition and remind us of bands like El Perro del Mar, The Cardigans or Kings of Convenience. These comparisons are obvious: yet regardless of which reference one draws upon, the carefree, happy-go-lucky mood of Andrew Collbergs work is what stands out. These songs broadcast - also due to the characteristic warm voice of the artist - a natural beauty which touches and seduces the heart. It defines Andrew Collberg's style and also holds high addiction potential for the audience.

2009 release. Italian singer and musical aesthete Joe Barbieri enlarges the borders of our musical cosmos with Maison Maravilha's even greater stylistic diversity. The sound spectrum of cantautori, bossanova and pop is enriched by elements of chanson, fado and tango. He also emphasized the already prevalent jazz-color. While his previous release, In Parole Povere, offered proof that there is yet still great Italo-pop, Maison Maravilha offers greater evidence for this fact. Included is a beautiful duet with Buena Vista Social Club singer Omara Portuondo. In spite of the greater stylistic range, Barbieri's sophomore album seems more coherent then this predecessor. If nothing else it could be for the gently refinement of the sound through a string orchestra. The interwoven arrangements offer a good hint on the search for Babieri's source of inspiration: Maison Maravilha emerged from the spirits of '50s and '60s movie soundtracks.
