BPX 019EP
|
Nocow is back on BPitch Control with a multi-faceted EP full of rousing energy and scintillating sonics. Across four delightful cuts he explores a range of moods and styles, all equipped with the power to move the dancefloor, physically and emotionally. "Noski" has a Detroit "jit" kinda vibe to it, with its clipped hip-hop samples and repetitive claps. Though the atmosphere evokes an air of mystery, with an unnerving riff. This is followed by "Pose", a gnarly juggernaut of a track featuring a pulsating b-line and breathless vocal clips, which add a human element. Retro synths lines take us back a couple of decades, adding an energizing layer of dancefloor nourishment. Then you have "Space 1999", which, as the title suggests, evokes a very cosmic feel... slightly reminiscent of Jeff Mills. Nocow's musicianship really shines through on this cut, with expertly balanced light and dark elements creating an immersive atmosphere. Finally, the title track, "Youth", invites us to bounce around in the playground for a while. A mesmerizing riff enchants the mind, while the beats tantalize the body. With the addition of soothing pads, this one is bound to invoke a multitude of out of body experiences...

FIGURE X015EP
|
Figure's newest addition to its catalog is Nocow's Ualldie EP, a vivid adventure following his trilogy Vozduh (FIGURE 094-1EP)/Voda (FIGURE 094-2EP)/Zemlya (FIGURE 094-3EP) on the main label. Nocow's synths stand out once again, churning out melancholic grooves over five pieces, which showcase his ability to mesh the psychedelic and the heavy, resulting in tracks both bittersweet and punishing. It's a distinct Russianness, a yearning frozen within, which Nocow's cloud techno transports effectively using stereo panning, finely layered percussion and wide strings to paint his imaginative landscape.

Voda ("water") the second part of his trilogy sees Aleksei Nikitin delving deep into Baltic seas. Coming up again with chilled flows of acid on "Vdaleke", the bubbly yet driving thump of subaqueous "Placeholder"; then he goes diving even further on the flip, cruising through underwater caves filled with tentacles of twisted, seductive electro, gnarly acid-techno, before finally emerging in "Iskatel", ears still ringing with harmonies of shredded beauty.

Vozduh ("air") marks the first in a series of EPs by Nocow for Figure, showcasing his emerging signature-style of electronica-tinged techno. As each part of the trilogy is represented by an element, the tracks on Vozduh are vaporous by nature: from the crackling ambiance of opener "Bouis" to the weightless vocals on stoic "Forgiven", as well as a surprisingly introspective take on ghetto-house or the wafting melodies closing out the record's B side -- all forms seem to be in constant shift, casting a dense yet permeable body of sound.

Zemlya ("earth"), the final installment of Nocow's three-part EP-series for Figure unearths the artist's maybe most drastic work to date. While opener "Libbi" still sprouts gently into crystalline arteries of ambiance, the incessant arps of "Synchronicity" loom ominously. Equally challenging, yet offering conciliation in form of string-led soothing is "Rave Button", after which the record finds closure in the seemingly open-ended sound spiral of "Troubles Will Be Miles Away".

FAUXPAS 016EP
|
Russian musician Alexey Nikitin is back with Ravine, containing seven tracks that go right under your skin. Timelessly beautiful; one could mistake it for an old Warp LP. Ravine is presented in three different versions with hand-silkscreened covers. Vinyl tastes better... Download code included.

After a short break, Fauxpas Musik announces its comeback with the album Solus by Nocow. The music of the St. Petersburg-based Russian reminds a little of old Aphex Twin and Autechre records. This masterpiece was produced by St. Petersburg-based musician Alexey Nikitin aka Nocow for the Siberian label Gimme5. This picture-perfect album with 12 tracks holds a special vision of perfection. Rumbling beats built similar to Burial, the melodies, dubs and sounds seem to evolve a life of their own and in the end you are overwhelmed by the dimensions of these tracks. On colored vinyl.
