PERMVAC 197-1EP
|
Massimiliano Pagliara is a true powerhouse. With his last album Feel Live (PLAYRJC 053LP, 2018), as well as an EP on Ostgut Ton (where he also holds a residency at the legendary Panormamabar) and a string of strong remixes, the trained dancer from Italy now presents his first EP for Permanent Vacation: Nothing Stays In One Place For Long. The four tracks on the EP show the perfect symbiosis between man and machine (in this case a fleet of analog synths and drum machines) and offer the full spectrum of Pagliara's production skills, from dubby, chord-driven techno, to playful acid disco and blissful Balearic house. Despite this wide range, he always keeps his trademark sound that one can also find in his numerous DJ sets around the globe, merging a variety of people and styles for a happy dance under one roof.

"The body never lies. Every dance is a graph of the heart. Nothing is more revealing than movement." These are the words of Martha Graham, one of the greatest American dancers and choreographers of the 20th century. Massimiliano Pagliara might as well have them tattooed on his chest, close to his heart, being an accomplished dancer, too. He has studied contemporary dance in Milan and Berlin, and went on to dedicate his life to transforming experience into movement, be it musical, physical, or spiritual. Massimilano's message is clear: Don't stand still. Take a chance at endless change, instead. Stemming from Lecce province, an area at the south-eastern-most tip of Italy, Massimilano has been based in Berlin for several years where he's been one of the main forces behind recombining the city's hardboiled techno scene with an often-overlooked sensibility for the soft and the tender. Call it underground disco passion. Massimilano's last album, With One Another (PLAYRJC 032LP, 2014), was about celebrating the joy of human encounters and in parts seemed like a big get-together with like-minded artists and friends. Following its release, Massimilano dedicated himself to intense traveling and exploring the world anew. The result of these experiences is Feel Live, Massimiliano's third full-length endeavor. It was recorded in several intimate, sometimes improvised studio settings between Los Angeles, Portland, and Massimiliano's homebase in Berlin as well as at airports and on intercontinental flights high up in the sky. Featuring vocals by Private Agenda, Peaking Lights, Kim Anh, and instrumental contributions by Fort Romeau, Tim K, and Jules Etienne, Feel Live is Massimilano's most playful and imaginative work to date. It's as emotional as sensual, as vibrant as the first ray of light after a thunderstorm has cleared the air. Is it awkward or odd to call this record jazzy? Presumptuous to pinpoint its spatial, almost orchestral qualities? Unfair on the ruling Cosmic powers to highlight its aspirations of founding a new land of Balearic Harmonia and getting down at a huge fertility rite with electro enthusiasts and house lovers? Not one bit. Feel Live is pure grandeur and elegance. It feels like an eternal movement.

Italian DJ and producer Massimiliano Pagliara follows two acclaimed solo albums on Live At Robert Johnson -- Focus For Infinity (PLAYRJC 008CD, 2011) and With One Another (PLAYRJC 032LP, 2014) -- with his first release on Ostgut Ton. The EP opens with the glorious synth arpeggios and catchy melodies of Italo-disco-meets-house cut "If I Try To Forget I Will Miss You Even More." "To A Faraway Place" starts off on a darker tone but reaches its climax after about five minutes when compelling melody takes over. "A Passing Day" closes the EP with introverted, slowed-down vibes.

"Yet another lover, not unknown to Ramona, enters the sacred halls of light again. Massimiliano Pagliara, originally from Lecce, Italy, now Berliner by choice, orchestrator of a warm bass line sound accompanied with rich melodies - due to a deep love for vintage drum machines and synthesizers - takes Ramona on a journey through the colorful depths of his new album With One Another - follow-up to his debut album Focus for Infinity (PLAYRJC 008CD/013LP), released in 2011. With One Another shares the joy of Massimiliano's trademark sound influenced by the underground disco of the '70s and new wave of the early '80s. Starting from this point, he took a handful of close friends along with him on a ride through his musical garden - reaching from Italo-induced disco-smashers over to acid-dripping floor-fillers to charming proto-house. Connoisseurs and pleasure-makers such as the mysterious Norwegian producer Telephones, primary rock and guru nd_baumecker, Mavin, dance music aficionado Lee Douglas, Credit 00 of Uncanny Valley fame and Ramona's darling Benedikt Frey contributed their devotion to sound to this bright piece of music. Ramona is as pleased as pleasure could only reach - all good things come in larger numbers!" --Ramona; Includes download code for the full digital album.

A backbone of Live At Robert Johnson Records, Massimiliano Pagliara's take on neo-dance, post-disco, and proto-house is as unmistakable as it is dream-like. With this sound palette, a love for hardware and surgical arrangements "Magic Serials" sees the Berlin-based producer on top of his game. While name-checking the tools of his work (the serials, got it?), MP unfolds untold stories of love, high spirits and deep meditation that every romantic rave craves for --acid poetry included.

This is the second 12" of top-quality remix action from Massimiliano Pagliara's critically-acclaimed album Focus For Infinity (PLAYRJC 008CD/013LP), from acid romantics to reggae house. The A-side features Brazil's Rotciv and Italian tru-house hero, Nicholas. Rotciv lifts up "Fade The Light" into a nu-groove-styled acid-disco jam. Nicholas remains in his realm of deep and heavy house, upping the tempo and also making use of the postal code 303 for "I'll Never Be." Exclusively to the vinyl release, DJ Sotofett gives "Harmonize" the jungle-boogie treatment.

Double vinyl version with 8 out of the 13 tracks from the CD. Massimiliano Pagliara moved from Lecce to Milan to pursue a dream, approaching club culture from an academic angle, which led to a diploma in theater-dance and choreography. And then Milan's alternative club scene gave him even more hints of what music was out there, seemingly waiting to be morphed into his very own vision of sound. After he moved to Berlin, this urge became stronger, and soon dancing in an academic context was just not enough, and dancing in legendary clubs like Ostgut took over, until he felt ready and willing to join in the buzz as a DJ. And not before long, Massimiliano Pagliara was the one who got the same crowds moving he formerly was an enthusiastic part of, with knowledgeable selections touching a plethora of bases from disco and house origins, spiked with a good dose of the unexpected, leftfield, obscure and overall utmost grooviness. All of this is delivered with his very own super-charming demeanor, styled with both grace and conviction, coming on like the sweet missionary of nocturnal bliss. And as much as he loves playing the music he loves, producing the music he loves was the obvious next step to take. Having developed an obsession with analog synth sounds, Pagliara gathered vintage equipment and holed up in his studio to work on producing the music he always wanted to produce. And the results were so convincing that they led Daniel Wang to release his debut single on his legendary Balihu imprint. Since then he has spread his lovely melodies and infectious grooves to mainstays like Rush Hour Recordings, Meakusma, Needwant and eventually the seminal club and label haven, Robert Johnson. And thus, Focus For Infinity came to life, Massimiliano Pagliara's testament to his own inspirations and preferences, transferred into a superb voyage of disco and house transcendentalism that owes as much to electronic pioneers like Patrick Cowley as it does to the legacy of the defining days of Italo disco, synth-pop and Chicago house. But however he may have put his Prophet 5, Korgs and Rolands into action, this album is clearly not clinging to paying tributes. It aims to sing its own song, and dance to its own rhythm. Judging from his acclaimed achievements, it may come as no surprise that this album sounds diverse and personal and is executed with dedication and grandezza.
