"Pere Ubu unveil their new album, Trouble On Big Beat Street, nearly four years after their previous record for Cherry Red, The Long Goodbye. The Modern Dance (1978) marked the end of rock 'n' roll. Trouble On Big Beat Street marks the end of the song. Pere Ubu ended with The Long Goodbye (their last album, also on Cherry Red, from 2019). Pere Ubu begins again with Trouble On Big Beat Street. If you missed the last 48 years then imagine a bad attitude. Imagine Electric Light Orchestra -- the version with Roy Wood -- then add Muddy Waters playing guitar and Nina Simone singing. Trouble On Big Beat Street, the 19th Pere Ubu studio album. David Thomas produced, mixed, and engineered it. The vinyl release is ten tracks. The CD release includes all 17 tracks recorded during the sessions. Those extra seven tracks were too good to lose but took up too much time to fit on a vinyl release. Pere Ubu is David Thomas, Keith Moliné, Gagarin, Alex Ward, Andy Diagram, Michele Temple and Jack Jones. Keith Moliné and Andy Diagram are the two pale boys. They have played with David more than 28 years. Electronica artist Gagarin was soundman for the two pale boys. Michele Temple has been in Pere Ubu 30 years. Improviser and life-long fan Alex Ward submitted a cover version of a David Thomas song to the band's live-streaming show. David invited him to join the band. David met Jack Jones in the pub."

"First album in four years from the band who helped invent alt-country and Americana. Produced by Ed Stasium, best known for his long relationship as producer and engineer for the Ramones. Ed has also produced two previous Long Ryders' records and worked with Smithereens, Soul Asylum, Motörhead, Marshall Crenshaw, Living Colour, the Hoodoo Gurus, and Julian Cope. Long Ryder guitarist/mandolinist Sid Griffin states, 'September/November is two-thirds the distilled alt-country genre we helped found back in the 1980s, one third Paisley Underground adventurism yet seasoned with a dash of our own crazed soulfulness thrown in.' Due to the unexpected passing of bassist Tom Stevens, bass duties on the new album were shared by Murry Hammond of Americana stalwarts the Old 97s and the Long Ryders' own Stephen McCarthy. Guests appearing on the album include D. J. Bonebrake of Los Angeles's punk legends X and Royal Academy of Music violinist Kerenza Peacock of the Coal Porters (now a popular LA session player for Disney and the Los Angeles Philharmonic)."

"Four-CD box set featuring all four albums recorded by J Mascis and Dinosaur Jr for Sire Records. Formed in 1984, Dinosaur Jr carved a singular path through the latter half of the 1980s, issuing three highly influential albums in the process before finding a home with Sire Records, who issued a run of four excellent albums as the alternative American rock scene the band had long been part of exploded, dominate and then retreated during the 1990s. Critically lauded on release, 1991's Green Mind took Dinosaur Jr's reputation to a new level, aided by the singles 'The Wagon' and 'Whatever's Cool With Me', and remains one of the band's best collections, and a firm fan favorite. Next, 1992's Where You Been continued that global ascent, becoming Dinosaur Jr's most successful album up to that point, reaching #50 in the US (where it sold over a quarter of a million copies), hitting #10 in the UK album charts, and spawning the hit single 'Start Choppin'. 1994's Without A Sound, the band's 6th album, continued that growth in popularity and commercial achievement, reaching #44 in the US (their highest ever album placing there) and featuring the hit singles 'Feel The Pain' and 'I Don't Think So'. Such was their appeal that the they also reached the mainstream during this period, contributing 'Blah' to the hit US TV show Melrose Place before 1997's Hand It Over appeared at a time of declining international interest in American alternative rock. Nevertheless, the album received the widespread approval and appreciation amongst critics and reviewers, and was followed, unusually, by an EP of non-album songs recorded for the Matt Dillon movie Grace Of My Heart, which became the band's last significant released before a lengthy hiatus. Collecting together all of these recordings, alongside B-sides, alternates and session tracks, 'Yeah Right' is a perfect accompaniment to the band's original independent period, and captures Dinosaur Jr as best heard -- loud, heavy and ready to explode."

"The Shop Assistants were one of the defining bands of the '80s independent boom. Formed in Edinburgh in 1984, originally as Buba & The Shop Assistants, they released the Peel-approved indie staple Something To Do , which featured Stephen Pastel on backing vocals. With line-up changes and an abbreviated name, they released the Shopping Parade EP a year later, which saw Morrissey describe 'All Day Long' (included on this collection) as his favorite track of the year. The band's David Keegan (who would subsequently join the Pastels) then formed 53rd & 3rd Records, which housed the band's 'Safety Net,' one of two songs, along with 'I Don't Want To Be Friends With You' (again, included here) to be voted part of John Peel's Festive Fifty of 1986. They also featured on that year's celebrated, infamous, nay, iconic C86 NME compilation. This re-release incorporates the material they released after signing to Chrysalis' Blue Guitar subsidiary. The Shop Assistants, aka Will Anything Happen, is their sole album release, and is accompanied here by two bonus tracks; 'Looking Back' and the slow version of 'All Day Long.' Although reissued in 2001, it has long been out-of-print, fetching scary prices on a well known auction site in acknowledgement of its status as one of the indispensable articles of the C86/shambling/independent scene."

"First-ever box set documenting all of Ian A. Anderson's seminal early albums -- including lots of rare material. First issued in 1969, Stereo Death Breakdown was credited to Ian Anderson's Country Blues Band, a moniker which hinted at the music therein. Eleven bonus tracks are drawn from Saydisc EPs (Anderson Jones Jackson, from 1967 and Almost The Country Blues, 1968) and Saydisc Matchbox albums (Blues Like Showers Of Rain, from 1968 and The Inverted World, 1969). The self-produced Royal York Crescent (1970) album was Ian's first on his new Village Thing label. Here it's joined by three extra recordings from 1969, live at Farnham Folk And Blues Festival and from sessions at Chapel Studios, London. Recorded at Rockfield Studios, A Vulture Is Not A Bird You Can Trust (1971) is now swelled with a quartet of additional sides, again from a studio tenure in Chapel Studios back in 1969. The fourth and final disc is devoted to Ian's final Village Thing album, Singer Sleeps On As Blaze Rages (1972) which is joined by four extra songs, including three previously unreleased -- the Hot Vultures' demos recorded at Village Thing, Bristol, 1973. Curated and supported by the artist, Please Re-adjust Your Time captures an exciting time in British roots music. From gutsy acoustic blues to ground-breaking acid folk, the music sounds as vital today as it did half a century ago."

"An essential part of the Felt re-issue series, a classic album released on vinyl. Remastered and revisited by Lawrence. During the '80s Felt made ten albums and ten singles for the Cherry Red and Creation labels. This beautifully produced series examines the work of one of the greatest underground groups of modern times. Before the Stone Roses and after Be-Bop Deluxe and Plastic Ono Band, John Leckie worked with Felt. Booked into a metal/reggae studio in Birmingham's industrial wasteland he sculpted a Michelangelo slice of new rock -- exquisite and beautiful guitar odysseys -- quite unlike anything the city had experienced before. Merging pop with a classical nuance Felt stood alone as the forerunners of a brand new style."

"Extensive 4CD set documenting the final years of The Stooges. A companion set to 2020's well-received You Think Your Bad, Man?. Featuring studio sessions and rehearsal recordings made in London, New York, Detroit, L.A. and Michigan as the band prepared to record and tour their Raw Power masterpiece. Includes seminal Stooges classics -- 'Search And Destroy', 'Raw Power', 'Gimme Danger' -- alongside countless lesser known tracks and material which was never recorded professionally. Sleevenotes from Iggy aficionado, the legendary Kris Needs and produced in association with MainMan. An intimate study of a band on the edge, captured as The Stooges began their final descent into rock 'n roll immortality. Following a two-year hiatus, and by fair means or foul, The Stooges reunited in 1972 for their final assault on the heart of American rock 'n roll. Born In A Trailer compiles legendary recordings made by the band at London's Olympic Studios and in assorted rehearsal spaces across the US as they wrote and rehearsed for the studio dates that would result in 'Raw Power', and their famously intense live shows of 1973 and 1974. Filled with focused recordings showcasing a band still determined to make it, and produced in conjunction with Tony Defries' MainMan organisation, who famously steered the careers of Bowie, Iggy and Lou Reed during that period, Born In A Trailer is a must-hear document of one of the great bands of the age accelerating into the final lap of a career which inspired a new generation of anti-establishment rock 'n rollers in the years immediately following their demise."

"Having established Dinosaur Jr as a mainstay of, and influence over, the alternative scene by the mid-1990s, J Mascis began to venture out alone, performing acoustic sets of his band's material. Martin + Me documents a late 1995 US tour, and includes Dinosaur Jr classics such as 'Repulsion', 'Get Me' and 'Keeblin' alongside of covers of The Smiths' 'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side', Carly Simon's 'Anticipation' and Lynyrd Skynyrds 'Every Mothers Son'. "The Fall were an English post-punk band, formed in Manchester in 1976. The band existed until 2018 and was essentially built around its founder and only constant member Mark E. Smith. Initially associated with the punk movement of the late 1970s, the group's music went through several stylistic changes over the years, but is often characterized by an abrasive guitar-driven sound and frequent use of repetition, and is always underpinned by Smith's distinctive vocals and often cryptic lyrics. The band is noted for its prolific output and released over 25 studio albums (more than triple that counting live albums and other releases). They never achieved widespread public success beyond a handful of minor hit singles in the late 1980s, but maintained a strong cult following. The band were long associated with BBC disc jockey John Peel, who championed them from early on in their career and cited The Fall as his favorite band, famously explaining, 'They are always different; they are always the same.' Are You Are Missing Winner is the twenty-second album by British post-punk band the Fall, released in November 2001. Since the bands last record Mark E Smith had replaced the entire line up. The album was recorded very quickly and very much on the cheap and band member Ben Pritchard described it as a very miserable experience. The influence of Rockabilly is very much seen throughout the album and saw them covering Lead Belly's 'The Bourgeois Blues'. This re-issue of the 2001 album comes with three bonus discs, live sets recorded at The Knitting Factory, The Garage and the ATP Festival. As with the other Fall reissues these have notes by Fall guru Daryl Easlea and have been mastered by long time engineer Andy Pearce."

"Formed in Buffalo, New York, in 1989, Mercury Rev quickly grew to become leading figures in left field alternative rock. Earlier albums veered towards experimental, off-kilter psychedelia but by the end of the decade, the band had developed their own brand of serene, piano-based Americana with the acclaimed, best-selling LP Deserter's Songs (1998). Originally issued in September 2008, Snowflake Midnight was the seventh album by Mercury Rev and followed The Secret Migration (2005) and All Is Dream (2001) -- both of which have already been treated to deluxe editions by Cherry Red. Although the album wasn't fanfared by any singles, the tracks 'Senses On Fire', 'Butterfly's Wing' and 'Snowflake In A Hot World' all enjoyed exposure on radio. Meanwhile, the vinyl edition of Snowflake Midnight was issued as a double LP with a bonus disc of remixes, entitled Strange Attractor. And V2 also released a 12" EP featuring further remixes. Cherry Red Records are proud to unveil a deluxe five-CD edition of this relatively recent highlight in the continuing musical story of Mercury Rev, compiled and coordinated by the band's Jonathan Donaghue and Sean 'Grasshopper' Mackowiak. Joining the original album are a second disc of previously unissued outtakes, entitled Hymn Of The Heavenly Snowflake, a third disc cryptically entitled Snowflakes From A Train (again, hitherto unheard) and a fourth disc of live material (again, unreleased until now). Disc five offers the first commercial CD outing for Strange Attractor, with the added bonus of those four 12" remix tracks. This expanded edition of Snowflake Midnight is presented as a plush, hardbook book containing original album lyrics, lots of visuals and new sleeve-notes by acclaimed author and journalist Martin Aston."

"Among the first crop of Creation Records bands in the mid-1980s, The Loft seemed the most likely to break through. Following the success of The Smiths, guitar-based independent pop was in vogue, Alan McGee's Creation label was turning heads -- its bands blending 60s psychedelia, the melodic end of punk and a new sound which would soon be immortalized on NME's C86 cassette. And in this London quartet, Creation had their answer to bands like Television, The Only Ones or early Modern Lovers, offering taut, off-kilter songs with an irresistibly deadpan cool. Sadly, after just two singles, 1984's downbeat debut Why Does The Rain and the punchier sequel, Up The Hill And Down The Slope -- an indie hit which the band performed live on TV show The Oxford Road Show, The Loft dissolved, with various members founding new bands The Weather Prophets, The Caretaker Race and The Wishing Stones. They left behind seven studio tracks, a BBC Radio 1 session for Janice Long and one track from a Creation LP documenting the scene's roots in small club The Living Room. However, The Loft's legend endured, eventually prompting a reunion in the early 2000s with all four original members -- singer/songwriter/guitarist Pete Astor, guitarist Andy Strickland, bassist Bill Price and drummer Dave Morgan. Alongside various well-received live shows, that led to a new single, 'Model Village' (2006) and more recently a session for Gideon Coe on BBC 6 Music (2015). The Loft's reputation as founding fathers of a new breed of mid-80s indie pop continues to grow to this day, with the band often cited as an influence. Compiled and coordinated by the band, Ghost Trains & Country Lanes expands on previous retrospectives of The Loft, adding those reunion recordings (including three previously unissued tracks), the Gideon Coe session and several live recordings from that historic performance at The Living Room back in 1984. (including many exclusive songs which were never recorded in the studio)."

"Formed whilst still at school in late 1974, The Outsiders charted their own unlikely path through the tumultuous punk era, releasing one of the very first independent 'punk' albums in the process and dividing opinion with their contribution to the new musical revolution. Aided and backed by front man Adrian Borland's father, the band produced material in an adventurous range of styles (somehow becoming 'post-punk' during the original wave), recorded in their own private studio and released material on their own Raw Edge label. Borland and co-founder Adrian Janes, whilst tapping into punk's energy, explored songwriting which dug deeper than much of whatever else was happening at the time, simultaneously youthful, reflective and knowing. Produced in association with founder and co-writer Adrian Janes, Count For Something charts a recording career lasting less than two years and which segued into Adrian Borland's next project, The Sound. Janes' remembrances, song-by-song recollections and in-depth recording information make for a unique insider's view of The Outsiders' experience, accompanied by a plethora of recently unearthed songs, demos and live material. Long overdue reappraisal and acknowledgement, The Outsiders approached the punk boom with gusto. Adventurous, unrestrained and somewhat eccentric, this was a young band feeding off of the atmosphere around them and transforming it into their own suburban take on that place and time. A must for punk and alternative rock collectors, fans of Adrian Borland and those with an interest in home-recording and the independent spirit."
