He has attained a legendary status as he was one of the originators of Gqom, inventing sounds as Umshanelo and chopping vocals that were widely sampled. Five-track EP representing the past, the present and the future of gqom -- the thunderous club sound from Durban, South Africa. The EP's A Side is dedicated to two of the genre's most prominent producers. DJ Lag is known as the "King of Gqom". Griffit Vigo, a real innovator in the gqom genre, has attained a legendary status amongst his peers. "Ree's Vibe" was the peak moment of DJ Lag's sets all over the world. Sbucardo is one of the most respected DJs around the townships of Durban. Featuring Abnormal on "IPhoyisa", whose lyrics in Zulu translate to "We at the club, Mr police man don't disturb us", the track represents gqom culture in Durban very well. Naked Boyz' "Story Teller" is characteristic of the Sgubhu style, a blend of gqom with more conventional house sounds, the new genre taking over Durban and finding its way onto mainstream radio. Scene kingpins Rude Boyz round off the release's line-up of gqom originators with "Umshunto". Includes download code which features bonus tracks from Griffit Vigo, DJ Lag, Sbucardo da DJ, and Naked Boyz.

Durban's 23 year-old producer Emo Kid presents Gqomtera on Gqom Oh!. The record actually explores sgubhu, a strain of South African dance music that shares many stylistic parallels with gqom, though it is always written with a 4x4 beat. Like DJ Lag before him, an artist widely considered the king of gqom, Emo Kid is also considered a pioneer in Durban. At eight tracks long, Gqomtera provides a comprehensive overview of the sgubhu sound, with the aim of taking the listener on their own "Durban Journey". "I wanted to show the uniqueness of my own style which I would describe as more musical," Emo Kid explains, "you can feel the music when you listen but it still hits hard with that gqom flavor." That gqom flavor, powered by hard, fast, uncompromising drums, provides a solid core from which everything else functions. Bright, shimmering trance synths are featured on "Futuristic Gqom". There's also space for harder, deeper cuts, the charging pace and power of "Insimbi Yase Dubane", and the anthemic "Asbambeki" featuring local crew TLC Fam. Capturing the raw, street sounds of his city, Emo Kid is the latest Durban artist to take the music global and with Gqomtera, he puts sgubhu firmly on the map. Includes a download card with four bonus tracks: "Enkwarini" featuring vocalist Fawell, "Ground Shaker", "Digital Response", and "Isukile" featuring Mapopo.

The first solo artist release for the Gqom Oh! label. Dominowe is a 19 year old producer from the Newlands east township of Durban, South Africa. Siyathakatha snapshots important themes in Dominowe's personal journey, showcasing his original style in the context of the Durban electronic music scene, especially beside gqom and sghubu. "Siyathakatha" translates to "black magic", or, "we witching", which is right at the heart of this release: listening to these sounds invite you into the universe of an unseen world. It is about gqom working its magic on the dancefloor. "Bhenga Nezinja" features Chaotic Boyz.

The Sound of Durban Vol. 1 represents the first full-length compilation collecting the sound of the suburbs and townships of Durban, South Africa known as "gqom". The album unites many of the local young producers of this fresh genre over 15 tracks on a double LP. Rome-based DJ and musician Nan Kolè and South Africa-based Lerato Phiri set up the Gqom Oh! label to highlight the music and artists of Durban, the often-overlooked cradle of the new South African sound. Taking its name from an onomatopoeic Zulu word signifying a drum, this extraordinary, apocalyptic bass music encompasses many influences. Each polyrhythmic track draws on the darker side of electronic music, hip hop, sound system culture, kwaito, UK funk, and deep African vibrations. With its mix of ethnic tradition and urban tension, South Africa has been a cradle of cultural phenomena. In its own way it is a country of great wealth, particularly rich in contradictions, yet decades after the end of the country's apartheid, little appears to have changed for the millions of black people who live in its notorious townships. It is from this background that innovation is continually being injected into the living body of the local music culture. The heartbeat of Durban is gqom. Features tracks by: Dominowe, Forgotten Souls, Formation Boyz, DJ Mabheko, Emo Kid & DJ Bradolz, Citizen Boy, Cruel Boyz, TLC Fam, Julz Da DeeJay, and Emo Kid. Limited repress with a new pantone cover; Two additional tracks on the download card.

A collection of behind-the-scenes photos from Gqom Oh! and Crudo Volta's Woza Taxi documentary (2016). This documentary from Italian music label Gqom Oh! and Rome-based radio station Crudo Volta sheds light on the artists behind gqom, an electronic dance movement born in the townships outside Durban. Woza Taxi, which premiered on The Fader in July, follows director Tommaso Cassinis and label head Nan Kolè as they visit the homes and studios of core gqom artists. Alongside the film release, Gqom Oh! and Crudo Volta have produced a 32-page traditional mini newspaper to showcase the best photographs from the trip. It's a beautiful publication filled with raw, poignant images - a rare look behind the scenes of an emerging music culture. "It was really an amazing experience," Kolè told The Fader about the project. "To see how they produce gqom, and how they live, and the whole creative process. How this music brings them closer together with their friends and crews, not only just to create a track, but also to dance together."

Woza Mixtape is the soundtrack of the Woza Taxi documentary (2016). Making the documentary in April 2016 - whilst visiting artists and their families in Durban - label boss Nan Kolè painstakingly narrowed down the selection of tracks for this mixtape. The trip lent a tremendous amount of insight to Nan Kolè, granting him both a detailed and broad view of the gqom scene and what gqom means to the youth of the township (for they consist the core music makers and listeners of gqom). The unique sound, which took Europe by storm at the start of 2016, is a way for the youth in the township to express themselves, but moreover enables them to express their pride and experiences in their Zulu culture and history. The release features 14 tracks showcasing different and new music from Durban - spanning core tribe through sgubhu to gqom. Features: Dominowe, Mafia Boyz, Julz Da Deejay, Formation Boyz, Citizen Boy, Emo Kid, Worsthood, Cruel Boyz, TLC Fam, DJ Mabheko, Forgotten Souls and DJ Nerd. Includes a download code of the entire compilation.

[repressed or reissued in 2016/2017?] as In the South African city of Durban, new stories are being born in a dancefloor language called "gqom." This bass music often opens in a crescendo, takes a few shortcuts in 4/4, and gathers pace into a polyrhythmic frenzy. Everything happens in a DIY-oriented universe, grafting organic and homemade samples (dog barks, whip lashes, drumming sounds). There is a line of continuity with the South African house movement, though with totally new elements from the sounds of dubstep. This sampler EP features tracks by Cruel Boyz from Mdantsane, Eastern Cape; Mafia Boyz (average age 17); and Citizen Boy.
