Alchemy is the debut album from 22-year old singer-songwriter Tara Nome Doyle, following the singles "Heathens", "Neon Woods", and "Mercury". Doyle's 2018 EP Dandelion, featuring her breakthrough-hit "Down with You", has so far amassed nearly two million streams. Recently, two of her songs featured in Sophie Kluge's feature film Golden Twenties (2019). Doyle is a member of Kat Frankie's choir and is featured on Frankie's a capella EP. Alchemy deals, in two songs each, with the four phases of development of the pre-modern natural philosophy, the alchemy. The album can be read psychologically or as a portrait of someone coming of age. Experience and reflection are closely entwined which is as beautiful as it's threatening. Doyle, whose middle name is pronounced just like "Naomi", is from Berlin-Kreuzberg, her parents are from Ireland and Norway. She speaks (and sings) both languages without accent. Is it permissible to recognize the biographical background of these landscapes in her art? The stored heat and the fog from the Irish peat bogs, the magic of the Norwegian forests? The concept album was recorded in large parts with David Specht (bass player and producer of Isolation Berlin) and Doyle's newly founded band in Berlin. Specht remains reserved, keeping the band in check. It's the interiors that you should hear --acoustically, but also thematically. The drums sound more like a knock on the window pane than the city noise outside the door, the guitar controls the harmony and not the power supply. The first instrument remains Doyle's voice, which is always working and is looking for a way. Inward, outward. All songs were written by Doyle, for the arrangement for "Neon Woods" she worked with Max Rieger (Die Nerven, producer for e.g. Drangsal and Ilgen-Nur).

Martin Hossbach on the release: "When Michaela Meise performed at West Germany at Kottbusser Tor in Berlin-Kreuzberg on March 20, 2015, accompanying herself on the accordion, I was perplexed. I knew her first album from 2010, which was about hymns (Preis Dem Todesüberwinder, originally released on Clouds Hill), but what she was playing weren't spiritual songs?! I wanted to put this music out on my label: the songs sounded sad, aloof and wistful but also proud, determined and unerring. The album title 'I Am Greek' (Ich Bin Griechin) is a tribute to Melina Mercouri's album Je Suis Grecque!, which was released in 1971 when Mercouri was deprived of citizenship by the Greek military junta. Mercouri lived -- like Mikis Theodorakis and many other cultural workers -- in exile. Meise's album is dedicated to the chanson scene of post-war Europe, whose songs were popularly folksy, but also political. Some talk about the experience of war, the Shoah and labor migration. Michaela Meise has translated the Greek, French, and Romanian songs into German (with the help of Aliki Marini and Carmen Gheorghe) so that the lyrics are understandable to a German audience, a gesture that was also common in the European chanson scene. More than half of the songs are by Mikis Theodorakis. He knows the translations and new recordings, gave his blessing and just noted a wrong tone... The other pieces on the album are by the French artists Barbara and George Moustaki and the German musician Alexandra. There is also a Romanian folk song. The album was recorded by Michaela Meise together with members of the group Isolation Berlin as well as the guest singers Carmen Gheorge and Dirk von Lowtzow (Tocotronic). The producer was David Specht (Isolation Berlin). Michaela Meise and me both have intimate relations with Greece -- Michaela has innumerable holiday memories with parents and brother, I have a friend who lives in Athens and whom I have been visiting regularly for about ten years now. This friend, the graphic designer Vasilis Marmatakis, styled Meise's album using an impressive, scary photograph taken in May 1985 during the occupation of Polytechnio Athens. Together, we opted for an elaborate packaging made by a bookbinder, a so-called Japanese tip-on-gatefold cover. The packaging reminds us of the records that were made in Greece for export and taken by German tourists as a souvenir back home."

F.S.K. plays "Ein Haufen Scheiß Und Ein Zertrümmertes Klavier" live at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, October 3rd, 2015; Mixed by Marcel Dettmann. F.S.K. (Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle) is an art school band from Munich that formed in 1980 and issued disturbing slogans of a new dissidence. The futuristic development of so-called noisemakers carried a key moment of deviant pop music into its emerging discourse. "Ein Haufen Scheiß Und Ein Zertrümmertes Klavier" (a pile of crap and a shattered piano), developed for Berlin's HKW, explores productive axes between destruction and deconstruction (paying tribute to Luigi Russolo).

When Martin Hossbach asked Dirk von Lowtzow whether he was interested in covering a song of Hossbach's favorite English pop group, Pet Shop Boys, he immediately said yes. Von Lowtzow chose "I Want A Dog", the B-side of Rent (1987). "And what about Neil Young?" "Sure, Martin! But you choose!" Hossbach decided that it would also have to be a song about animals. He went for "Beautiful Bluebird" from Chrome Dreams II (2007). Both songs were recorded and produced by Moses Schneider. The dog on the cover is drawn by von Lowtzow himself, the artwork is by Will Bankhead.

The secret after-hour über-hit of the '90s, Matthias Strzoda's "Tasse Kaffee", gets its first release on 7" vinyl on Berlin-based label Martin Hossbach. Strzoda is the go-to drummer for Andreas Dorau and Rocko Schamoni. While working on songs for Dorau in the 1995, Strzoda wrote the lyrics to "Tasse Kaffee" while Dorau, Tommi Eckart (of 2raumwohnung, acting as producer) and Strzoda composed the music. The B-side offers a previously unreleased living-room demo from 1994 by Strzoda of the Andreas Dorau classic "Bye-Bye".

Piano music performed by Christian Naujoks, as both artist and composer. Plus a track of ultra-modern techno music in the guise of Physical Therapy's phantastic "Softcore Mix." Naujoks: "Did you know that Michael Nyman actually invented the term 'minimalism' in the late 1960s? I think that is amazing. I love his film scores a lot, especially the one he composed for the Michael Winterbottom film Wonderland. I watched it on television sometime in the early '00s, at night when visiting my family (they live in the countryside in northern Germany, so there's nothing else to do). I was deeply touched by the music and it simultaneously sounded so easy to play that it made me think: I could learn that! So I ordered the sheet music and practiced it on my Yamaha virtual analog synthesizer keyboard. . . . So here is my very sincere Nyman interpretation for you. 'Unsung' is another favorite of mine. I once went to a Helmet concert in the Markthalle in Hamburg, and it was one of the loudest experiences I ever had. I played this cover version during the soundcheck of my first official Christian Naujoks concert, and Dirk von Lowtzow -- of the band Phantom/Ghost, whom I was about to 'support' that night -- came to me and said he liked it. Since Martin Hossbach and I originally conceived this release as a 'Christmas cassette,' I thought it would be nice to contribute these kind of long-time Christian Naujoks classics -- although I didn't write them by myself, but have been performing them live since almost 10 years. At one point, Martin came up with the idea to also include a remix by Physical Therapy on the cassette. So, as it's really tricky in terms of copyrights to have cover versions remixed, I composed a truly original Christian Naujoks piano piece to be transformed by Dan Fisher. I wrote some chord patterns and imagined them to be really dancey when combined with a ravey '90s-style techno beat. My impression is that Daniel and I are completely on the same page here, and he did a really great job! I can't wait for DJs to play it in the clubs."

Jemek Jemowit has never been easy to read -- is he serious or is it all a joke? With Jemek Jemowit Is Doktor Dres, the one-man band, DJ, and conceptual artist that is Jemek Jemowit moves between old-school rap, Southern trap, and EBM, skillfully mixed by hardcore techno legend Marc Acardipane. With anarchistic-Dadaistic and often quite explicit, the self-described "post-patriotic" artist sings in Polish, the language of his parents, and in German, the language of the country in which he grew up and studied and where he lives at the time of this release. On his "hyper-patriotic" (Jemek Jemowit's words again) EP Tekkno Polo, released on the Polish Oficyna Biedota label in 2012, Jemek Jemowit focused on Polish culture in Poland. The spectacle of a Pole with a German passport presenting music recorded in Italy and inspired by Polish sub-genre "disco Polo" was exotic, and Jemek Jemowit touched on subjects including national dishes like bigos and bizarre figures of Polish pop culture. Was he serious or was it all a joke? On Jemek Jemowit Is Doktor Dres, released on the Berlin-based label Martin Hossbach, Jemek Jemowitz embraces the role of the Pole in Berlin. In Polish peppered with neologisms and grammatical mistakes, he states that his alter ego, Doktor Dres (which translates roughly to "Doctor Tracksuit") leads a better live in Berlin than he did in Poland. He often switches into the German language, too. In an interview with Martin Hossbach label founder Martin Hossbach, Jemek Jemowit explains, "I'm the perfect Pole in Germany who goes shopping at the most expensive warehouse in West-Berlin, the KaDeWe, without reproach and my German is pretty good, too!" He has now become the person that Tekkno Polo reacted against with its "hyper-patriotic" approach. Germany is now the sacred land, and on track "Oryginalne Adidasy," he invites his fellow Poles to come and visit him -- he who "grew up between The Wall and Moschino" -- in Berlin and have pierogi made by Gucci at the KaDeWe. "Endlessly bragging / Style without class / Deutsche Mark / Oryginalne Adidasy" -- this is Doktor Dres's slogan.

There was a time when ringtones were important. At first, they simply identified the few who actually owned cell phones, before the possibility emerged of distinguishing oneself by choosing a cool ringtone. In May 2014, the Doofe Musik (Stupid Music: Songs for Dreaming, Sedation and Forgetting) festival took place at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin. As part of the HKW's Anthropocene Project, the festival focused on escapism and the special function of music when retreating from reality. HKW curator Detlef Diederichsen and Sound Studies Lab principal investigator Holger Schulze decided to focus not only on music that music-lovers usually hate -- e.g. Schlager music, easy listening, light jazz -- but also on ringtones. The audio logo of Deutsche Telekom has been part of Germany's mobile phone culture from the very beginning, so it acted as a starting point from which to question the usual conceptual understanding of ringtones. Using Christian Kellersmann's idea of the "Pocket Symphony," Diederichsen and Schulze invited ten artists to come up with adaptations of Telekom's audio logo. The results were performed for the first time during Stupid Music and once again in October 2014, when most of the recordings on this album were made. The short motif, as simple and unforgettable as it is, is ideal musical material. Everyone knows it; everyone has some sort of connection to it, and these ten different versions open up the most varied possibilities for associations. It is time to take the ringtone seriously again. As the most reduced yet most widely available form of music in the world, it contains enormous unrealized potential. Includes tracks by John Kameel Farah, Ana Maria Rodriguez, Zeitblom, Eliav Brand, Guido Möbius, Juliana Hodkinson, Alex Paulick, Ari Benjamin Meyers, Adi Gelbart, and Patric Catani.
