From the opening bars of "Bright Lights," it's clear that Lisbon brothers Bruno and Leo aka Octa Push have redrawn the parameters of their sound. They've developed the elements that defined their breakthrough releases and expanded them to develop a broad, exciting palette of new sonic textures and colors. Their early releases on Soul Jazz, Fabric, Enchufada, and others expertly balanced UK bass and African influences to catch the attention of high-profile fans such as Thom Yorke, SBTRKT, and Gilles Peterson. An undeniable ear for melody and a percussive sensibility drawing on the polyrhythms of African music set them apart from the crowd and on Oito, their debut LP, they've taken those two elements and worked them into 12 compelling tracks that marry the organic and the electronic as well as underground music from Europe and the African continent. The album takes the sub-bass and syncopated rhythms of UK genres like garage as its starting point but once again filters that through a kaleidoscope of influences, mainly stemming from Portugal's unique cultural ties to Africa. Unlike previous work, they've worked to infuse the album with musical references to music like Nigerian Afrobeat or funana from Cape Verde without overtly sounding like the music itself. Re-contextualizing instruments like kalimbas or xylophones and playing with complex rhythms gives their music a richness without them ever sounding like copyists. The album also marks an expansion of their work with vocalists, starting with Alex Klimovitsky from the Portuguese/U.S. group, Youthless. He's now a mainstay of the Octa Push live show, lending his skills as a vocalist, programmer and multi-instrumentalist. Elsewhere, we find Sasha from Berlin's pioneering Jahcoozi, London-based Catarina Moreno, and Braima Galissa -- one of the best kora players in Guine Bissau. The complex melody of that traditional instrument is woven into "Ali Dom," along with Galissa's powerful vocals, conjuring up perhaps the most vivid non-European image on the album.

"Senseless have always believed that the spirit of rave never died, it's everywhere, but now in 2010 we've discovered that spirit distilled into its purest form, let's call it essence of rave. Kanji Kinetic makes it, a monstrous hybrid of electro, bassline, jungle and, yes, rave. It doesn't just deny classification, it smashes it to pieces. These tracks look backwards but sound like the future, they're cheeky but deadly serious, they're rough and smooth, sharp and blunt, sweet and sour, bouncy, wonky, hyper and just a little bit insane. In short, the ultimate party music. The EP is a game of two halves, easing you in at 140 BPM with a wonky mixture of future-bassline and pitch bent synths (ToyGuns) then rolling into the monstrous Scientist. Reach-for-the-lazers rave stabs and scorching bass collide to make something seriously dangerous. We then take a quick diversion for a remix from Kaiser, a newcomer with releases coming on Starkey's Slit Jockey, who twists 'Toy Guns' into a devastating mix of grime, 8bit bleeps and UK Funky syncopation, this is what it sounds like to be one of those ghosts being eaten by Pacman. Next up we turn up the pace for 'New Era', weighing in at 175 BPM, it's the fastest thing we've ever released but its half time weight makes it feel like jungle chopped and screwed in the fifth dimension. Quite simply it has the biggest drop you will hear this year, possibly ever. Its jungle tempo but drop this in a dubstep set and watch the floor ignite. The title track, 'Zombiezz', also rocks 175 BPM on the half time but does it 4x4, cheeky cartoon samples and strings building to another seismic sub frequency workout. Finally 'Zombiezz' gets two remixes, Cracks turn in something pretty special, taking things back down to 140 and turn in a mix they're calling 'Horror House', a visceral mixture of techno, grime and lots of bass. Then just for fun we asked legendary hardtek producer 9MM to see if he could make 'Zombiezz' a little harder, and he did."

"The product of almost a year's work, Senseless Records are proud to present their first CD project; Vocals and Versions Volume One. What started out as an idea for a 12" vocal EP has escalated in to a major project which will now be released on two separate CDs, two vinyl EPs and digital download. The album features 100% original and exclusive dubstep, dancehall, grime, bassline and garage vocals and versions from a kaleidoscopic range of worldwide talent including Warrior Queen, Foreign Beggars, Starkey, YT, MRK1, King Cannibal, Billy Nasty, Jimmy Luv, Kanji Kinetic, Bongo Chilli, Bunnington Judah, Crunc Tesla, Jack Sparrow, Octapush, Bombaman, Rekordah, DeVille, Sarantis, Sasquatch, Ghosttown and more. The tracks started out based round a collective of artists in Leeds, UK, but now includes artists from all over the world including New York, Sao Paolo, Kingston, Lisbon, Martinique and Canada. The albums are based on vocal tracks from the in house Senseless Records producers; Sarantis, DeVille, Sasquatch and Ghosttown in collaboration with the regular Senseless family and new friends from all over the world they've made whilst putting together this project. While they are the first CDs on the label, they're also like a best-of the label to date; there are fresh remixes from Starkey [Planet Mu/LoDubs/Trouble and Bass]and King Cannibal [Ninja Tune] of the label's biggest vocal tracks to date with Warrior Queen, 2004's 'More than Money', and 'Retaliate' respectively. There are also new versions of tracks recorded up to six years ago, including 'Justice Dub,' originally a reggae dub cut by Sarantis to play on The High Pressure Sound System in Leeds featuring their MC, Urban Vox. A diverse set of influences but what unites them is a love of all shades of bass music from the UK and beyond and combining elements of all the genres above in to something fresh. For that reason it's hard to pin down the sound of the CD except to say it's exciting, vital and bursting out of the sleeve with energy and ideas. The CD itself is 100% carbon neutral and comes in a deluxe digipak case made from recycled materials, and features hand drawn artwork from renowned Bristol, UK, graffiti artist Song."

"Senseless 008 for 2008 with the return of label co-runner Sasquatch. The big man has a long history deep rooted in the soundsystem and free party culture round the UK and beyond including time spent as a hard-tech producer, a dub MC and part of a UK hip hop crew. All these elements and more fuse in his tracks, adding another distinctive sound to the Senseless arsenal. Track one, 'Slayer,' has been on dubplate for over a year, in that time it has won a not inconsiderable army of fans including a lot of airtime on Rinse and SubFM and at big raves like Subdub, DMZ and FWD. Big hitters playing this one include Chef and Oris J, who likes it so much he has offered to remix it, watch out for that in a few months. The track wires a menacing heavy rock riff to some razor sharp arpeggio madness on the bass line to create a dancefloor destroyer that will still be looping round the heads of any crowd well after the night is done. The flip, 'Hangman,' has already had the Mary Ann Hobbes seal of approval and plays on the Breezebock, other fans include Warlock, who has included it in all his latest mixes and radio shows. The track picks up where DeVille's Stamina left off on Senseless 007, a 4x4 soca-style beat with a jump up offbeat bass-- add original dancehall vocals from Asher Don and you have yourself a future carnival classic. People will lose control of their limbs when this drops."

"This is DeVille's first release on the label but as well as running The Fix Up in Leeds and hosting a show on SUBFM he's a fixture at all Senseless raves and has just completed a seven date tour of the USA showcasing the label's sound mixed up with his own diverse set of influences. Rumble proved to be a big hit stateside and has featured on a XLR8R podcast with regular plays from DJs like Starkey who push the street bass sound that is dubstep's close neighbor. It hot-wires a jump up soca style beat to old school rave melodies and box busting bass to create a genre defying mix-up that dubstep DJs across the world are switching up their sets with. Regular plays across the board on SUBFM, Dubstep.FM, Reload and more. Stamina continues the bass-rave theme with a jungle sample for heads to reminisce over while the rest of the crowd are bouncing up and down like they got glow stick juice in their eye. Raucous 4x4 beats and a driving arpeggiated synth propel a wall of junglist sub bass forward with dub echoes and techno percussion joining the dots. This one's been tearing down warehouses from Athens to Caracas. Bass rave for president 2008."

"Another product of Leeds' incredibly fertile dubstep scene and member of the Senseless clan, Jack Sparrow digs deep and pulls out two primed heavy floor rockers for his debut 12". Obviously informed by bass-weight sessions at Subdub with the indomitable Iration rig, young Sparrow has learnt a thing or two about the effect of a well produced and dispatched subbass on a crowded dancefloor, demonstrated with style and efficiency on the Mala DMZ style up-rocker 'Blackout.' Rolling with a mean steppers intent, Sparrow drops a kicking riddim with moody digi-dub riffage and divebombing subs to find favor in any bigboy's set. 'Spam Purse' on the flip opts for a Coki style bassbin wobbler with Skream alike arpeggios and the simple but deadly 'bass...roll' refrain, which says it all, really. "In the second bellicose offering from Senseless, label general Sarantis dispatches Sasquatch onto the frontline inna breakstep assault for the dancefloor. 'Omerta' batters out a barrage of warehouse-ready breakstep patterns over a serrated darkside bassline that by rights shouldn't be let in the door on account of its stinking attitude and lethal tendencies.
